About
It has always perplexed me that Turkish names, being so phonetic as they are, could be so widely (and wildly) mispronounced by some of the best in the broadcasting profession. I decided to take this on as a personal mission and help international broadcasters to get their Turkish pronunciations right. Of course, you are welcome to use the information on this site for whatever purpose you wish.
This site is dedicated to the proper pronunciation of Turkish proper names. In other words, names of persons and geographical places.
The objective is to enable especially international broadcasters, but really anyone dealing with Turkey, to pronounce Turkish names in a way that will not sound strange to Turkish ears. If you are a CNN broadcaster, of course you don’t wish to mispronounce the name of the Turkish president or the name of a Turkish town.
To make it really useful for international broadcasters, the database includes the entire Turkish council of ministers.
Lest we forget, the most important aspect of the site is that has all these pronunciations as audio files. Listen and learn, in other words.
